Delay plugins and precise feedback control

I don't use delay plugins much, at all. I know how to use them just fine, except a few things. Such as how to make the feedback stop after a precise time or number of echos. For example, I'm trying to make the delay stop after several milliseconds no matter how much feedback there is left. I just want it to go silent. Even if the feedback is at full volume and each echo matches in volume of the input signal and repeats forever - I would like to control it to end after, for example, 3 echos. Is this possible only with automation? Or is there some function of the delay plugins that I'm not familiar with that achieves this?
