Importing an audio clip causes it to distort

When I import an audio clip [an mp3] the imported version has added crackles/distortions which are not on the original. I've restarted the pc, tried different ways of importing [drag and drop onto the playlist/import directly onto the channel rack]. This has never happened before and I've done this process quite a lot.

The mp3 is an AI generated tune, but I assume that should not be relevant as it is still just an mp3.

Any ideas please?
