I've done a TON of research into understanding the mindset of a music producer in the mid 80s!
I actually have come to a level of conclusion that back in the 80s, if you were a professional music producer then they were really delving into some very experimental stuff!
- fader automation was being invented!
and I have done enough learning to know that in 1988, if you had an expensive setup with 64 channel mixer with automatable faders, you would probably have the mixing console timecode synced to a daw like this:
which would handle the automation for the channels on the mixer, running in timecode sync to a shitload of physical synth racks, connected to the mixer.
