[Hype/Discussion] Let's talk about the upcoming new Playlist, Mixer and Wavetable synth...

I've been an avid FL Studio user for over 20 years, working in a professional environment, and I'm a huge fan of Image-Line and their dedication to innovation. As I plan to write a blog about the upcoming improvements ( even though I know there's not a lot of information on them yet ), I wanted to share my thoughts here and gather input from this wonderful community.

The upcoming enhancements to the playlist, mixer, and the introduction of a wavetable synth are, in my opinion, some of the most significant updates FL Studio has ever seen. Here’s why I believe they are game-changers:

The Playlist & Mixer

FL Studio’s unique production workflow offers a blend of modularity and a linear timeline, enabling a visual overview of your entire composition. This flexibility allows for both intricate signal routing and straightforward sample/instrument processing directly to the master channel.

However, the modularity can also be a drawback, particularly due to the lack of direct linking between the pattern editor, playlist, and channel mixer. While it is possible to achieve this integration, the process is not as intuitive or seamless as in other DAWs.

Having used Ableton Live Suite 11 for about six years, I’ve experienced a much faster workflow. The immediate setup of a new instrument with its own channel, and the ease of grouping instruments (selecting a few tracks and pressing CMD + G to create a group/bus channel), are features I dearly miss in FL Studio. These functionalities significantly enhance efficiency.

In FL Studio, setting up each new track and configuring its routing is cumbersome. Identifying track routes in the mixer requires manual visual organization with separators and colors, and this process needs repetition every time a new track is added. The lack of synchronization between the pattern track, playlist, and mixer further complicates the workflow.

Although it is possible to drag an instrument from the playlist to achieve some of this behavior, this method is not immediately apparent to new users. In my opinion, these features should be the default behavior. Grouping multiple channels in the playlist should automatically reflect in the channel mixer and pattern tracks. Simplifying this workflow would drastically improve speed and efficiency for FL Studio users, and it’s something I’m fervently advocating for.

Wavetable Synth

Wavetable synthesis is incredibly versatile, which is why instruments like Serum, Vital, Pigments, Phase Plant, Zebra, ANA, and Massive are so popular. They offer a vast range of sounds and the capability to play samples at any rate with tremendous flexibility, thanks to their varied wavetable sources.

With the introduction of FL Cloud, we can potentially replicate a system akin to what Current by Minimal Audio offers, with a comprehensive preset and wavetable cloud collection. I foresee this new wavetable synth quickly becoming a favorite among FL Studio users, given the immense talent within our community.

My hope is that the new synth will include a robust set of FX, an easy method for bundling and importing preset packs, and the ability to store used wavetables/samples within the presets. These features would not only enhance usability but also foster creativity and collaboration within the community.

I’m excited about these updates and look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences. Let’s discuss how we can make FL Studio even better!
