As a sound design method?
Why?
It's absolutely amazing what you can do with it. But sadly at the moment there's very few options for you to do this with. The best I've found is the software photosounder, it's okay, but it's very buggy, outdated interface, and basic, and expensive.
It's incredibly powerful to be able to EQ a sound using images you can specifically draw yourself.
It's incredibly powerful to be able to draw your own sounds too.
You can get effects that would take hours to make or would be impossible to make using conventional methods, in just a few minutes.
You can do some really complicated vocode/eq type effects in seconds that would take days potentially to achieve using normal methods.
You can do some really weird and creative filtering effects.
You can even take a conventional sound and slightly edit it or trace over it to make it sound a bit different.
Or you can just make/draw a drum sound without using any samples or boring sine sweeps.
What I don't understand is why this hasn't caught on? It's soo good. There's hardly any tools out there that do anything like this. In fact 1 of the main options for doing this kind of thing is a software that is basically still using a 1990s UI, looks like some app you'd have used in 1996, absolutely horrendous to use, yet its one of the popular results.
This just shows how little innovation there's been or interest there's been in this kind of software. It's shocking to me, because the possibilities are endless, and creativity is endless, and you can make some really unique sounds doing it.
