"Om Tryambakam" is the opening phrase of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, one of the most revered and powerful mantras in Hindu tradition. This mantra is dedicated to Lord Shiva, particularly in his form as Tryambaka, the "Three-Eyed One," symbolizing divine insight, balance, and enlightenment. This mantra is often used for healing, protection, and overcoming fears of mortality.
The full mantra is:
"Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat."
Translation and Meaning
Om: The sacred sound representing the divine and universal energy.
Tryambakam: Refers to Shiva as "the three-eyed one" (representing the past, present, and future).
Yajamahe: We worship, honor, or meditate upon.
Sugandhim: The fragrant one, who spreads divine blessings.
Pushtivardhanam: The one who nourishes and strengthens all life.
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan: Like a ripe cucumber or gourd is effortlessly released from its stem (symbolizing freedom from attachment).
Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat: Free us from the fear of death, but grant us immortality or liberation.
Spiritual Significance
The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is often recited for protection, physical and mental healing, and liberation from fear and suffering. Believers recite it to invoke divine protection and inner peace, especially during times of illness or adversity, as it’s thought to generate positive energy and support overall well-being.
Enjoy this cooperation! Thanks a lot to Krishnananda!
