This, in combination with setting the counter-delay on mixer tracks, is essentially how the VDC multi-script for Kontakt works. Just as an example, the commonly-used presets for it all have a global delay of 360ms, which is what you set on your mixer tracks, and something like a stac would reduce that delay by 75ms in real time.

Doing it in a Kontakt script has some notable problems, like not handling swaps between legato and shorts super well, but it works well enough for most purposes.
