How to create this "effect"???

Hello!

I am really curious to how this specific effect could've been made. I am referencing to Nimino's song "Nothing Perfect" at 1:50 where the laugh is "triggered" by the snare. My first guess is that the laugh is manually chopped to fit the rythm of the snare. But is there perhaps something else to it? It sounds really nice. Maybe a gate involved?
