Old user of FL Studio here, since version 2 or 3, I forgot. French so my apologies for wrong English.
It was such a big deception when I found out last year that I cannot use my newly purchased Expressive-E Osmose entirely in FL Studio, as it doesn't record MPE events.
So it saddened me to come to this decision, but in January I finally purchased Ableton Live Suite, so that I could use it the way I should.
I made 2 songs on Ableton already, it's a steep learning curve coming from FL, I still have lots to learn, but eventually I'm finding my bearings, and it's great to finally being able to use MPE on my songs, plus it's really easy to record midi clips on Ableton.
I like how easy it is to use sidechain on Ableton. I never understood why it has to be so tedious in FL, being forced to go to the mixer and setup everything here. Half of time I end up side-chaining the wrong track and also it's easy to loose sidechaining by clicking on the little cord attachment point. Keep that for compatibility but let us sidechain individual channels or playlist tracks.
I also like that in the arrangement view of Ableton, you can easily insert some empty time and it will push all the automation tracks to the right, then you just have to fill in the blanks. I have yet to find how to do that in FL without breaking all my automation.
I like how it is easy to render some parts of the arrangement to a new audio clip.
Not everything is great in Ableton though, for example I dislike the Ableton note editor, FL piano roll is much better.
And it is also much easier to create drum loops with patterns, FL is vastly superior in this regard.
I also prefer the look and feel of FL, the UI is better designed, less cluttered, more pleasing to look at, Ableton's UI is quite messy with a lot of very tiny buttons, and even with a big 34 ultra-wide screen I find myself lacking space in Ableton because of the vertical stacking of the view, note editor and effects, while I never had this issue in FL.
I do not like that it's not easy to display again the UI of a VST plugin whereas it's very natural in FL, just click on the channel button and you're done.
But I'll learn and adapt, because the most important for me is that I can play with my Osmose the way I should in Ableton.
All this to say, if FL does not get MPE (or Midi 2.0) soon, I'm going to use it less and less.
I still like FL Studio and will still use it, after all it's been more than 20 years, but, as I get better on Ableton, I'm going to use Ableton more and more.
You can say I'm just a customer in middle of millions of others. But I'm sure I'm not alone in that case.
As a major DAW you just cannot ignore progress and use technical excuses to not offer what your concurrents have offered for a few years already.
I know the story, that historically Gol wasn't a big fan of Midi and how we're told that MPE is just an unofficial hack, but that's not relevant to the customers, and it's supported by a lot of hardware and plugins today.
Expressiveness is very important in musical creation, and if you limit what your user's expressiveness, if you limit what they can do with their gear, then you do not understand what music is about. Music is freedom. Music is emotion.
Image-Line, that is how you loose customers.
I heard that Midi 2.0 is going to be released real soon. I hope that work is on the way already, and that you ship it to your customers in a timely manner.
I'm not saying it's easy to add MPE or Midi 2.0. I'm a developer myself, I know how complex it is. I'm just saying you're late, and the other DAW made this a priority a long time ago, while it's just a project for a future release of FL.
Even Ardour with its limited means was able to propose it.
Time to rewrite that midi engine.
And please find an easier way to do sidechain.
Thank you.
