Actually, the kernel is very stable in terms of user space changes. As a matter of policy, it may grow but it never breaks backward compatibility unless a bug was found. The distro isn't particularly important either because it's essentially just a package manager. You're more likely to find trouble with desktop environments, but even then it's not a massive issue because those are all standardized and people using the non-compliant options usually know enough to help themselves and even you, though they're likely not trying to make music on their machines anyway.
