For me there's no mixing phase, and listening phase. Just one phase.
All you have to do is take a sine wave and play it back at each of the frequencies that a good equalizer has. For example, a DBX 1231, which has 31 bands. For example, 20 hz, then 25 hz, then 31.5 hz ... etc.
Then play the sine wave at each of those frequencies through 'your setup'. Chances are with most of you, some bands will sound LOUDER than others. In which case, you are screwed. Because when you make music ("mixing"), you are constantly compensating for the difference of the bands.
However, if all sine wave bands sound EQUALLY loud to you, then you have a truly BALANCED setup. You can watch movies, make music, listen to music, all through ONE set of headphones and it will sound fine.
Since 1999, when I set this up, I haven't had to touch my equalizers again. The only knob I mess with is the volume.
