Smaller synths vs the monster synths

I have been using synths like simsynth live, wasp; wasp xt, and alpha 3 from linplug lately. I have been more productive and able to get the sound im after by using the smaller vst's and then layering them and running fx on what i want. I'm not sure why i prefer using the smaller modules but its working for me; maybe its just easier to focus on one element then build it up from there. Anyone else find this way of working easier?
