What's up With This? Loud Muzik

When I finish a song I try to keep my music that I see on the Decibel levels out of the red, however when I play it, my music sounds somewhat, sometimes considerably lower than the professional artists that I have on my windows media player. So I went back and turned up my levels(gain) on each of my instrument settings in the step sequencer and of course my meter just stays in the red now without even moving, but my music is as loud as the other recordings. Are those guys just turning up the volume in the studio like that or what. Is there any way I can get comparable sound without blowing my decibel meter out the roof, or am I doing just fine. Suggestions, comments, etc. welcome.
