Gamepad with an XY controller question

Hi all,

So I have a Logitech Gamepad F310 (if that matters) and have successfully set the left and right joysticks to control the x/y pad (yeah, not hard at all).

But I'm wondering, is there a way to setup my 8+ buttons to do things like send Midi on/off messages or incremental parameter changes? One button seems to make the Y-axis jump to the top, so it makes me think some things are possible. All tips/hints welcome because I don't really know what is possible.
