another compression question

hello. i posted a compression topic a while back. but to make it totally clear for me i want to ask this question.

say i have an instrument such as a kick or instrument or vocals ect. say a snare for example i put it in the mixer channel 2 and i see on the meter its at -6 db. if i set up a compressor on that snare and i set the threshold to -15 db and say the ratio to i dunno about 2:1 does that mean anything going over -15 db is compressed??

if so does a 2:1 or 2:0 mean it lowers the volume by two decibels. can someone explain my questions please.
