why are my beats quieter than others?

I notice that my beats (hip hop) are quieter than others when I compare to beats on youtube and beatstars. I keep my beat at or below 0 db at all times, because thats what I've been told creates the best quality of sound, but that makes it so I can't make my beat louder.
