I usually use claps in songs, but am starting to use more snares and encountering some issues.
My main drum plug-in is Drumaxx, and it’s good for most drums, but its snares are subpar, as has been previously noted in the forums.
I’m not good enough at programming Drumaxx to come up with my own snares, and tweaking the existing presets hasn’t yielded very good results.
I’m having a few issues with snares:
- the snare gets buried in the mix and doesn’t cut through, especially when competing with a phat synth like Sylenth1
- the snare sounds too flimsy and trebly. I’m looking for more of a deep and cracking snare
- when I put reverb on a snare and have to crank the snare’s volume in the mix, I’m getting this weird resonance artifact, almost a whistling or squeaking sound. Has happened in multiple songs, and idk what is causing it, but I assume has to do with reverb
Some questions:
- do people tend to double a snare and pan it L and R to get it to cut through the mix
- what plugins do people suggest for snares? I’m going to see if FPC has better snares than Drumaxx
- what sample packs do people recommend? I’ve seen reference to addictive drums, so maybe I’ll look into that. I’d rather not spend a bunch of money tho
